Overview

The region between today’s İzmir and Antalya is home to a wealth of antique civilizations. These civilizations have left behind a rich legacy of art, architecture, and culture.

The earliest civilizations to inhabit this south western part of Anatolia were under the rule of Ionian, Lydian, Carian, Persian and Helen states.

One of the important civilizations in this region was the Lydians. The Lydians were a wealthy and powerful people who ruled this region from the 7th to the 6th centuries BC. They were known for their gold and silver coins, their system of weights and measures, and their advanced engineering skills.

The Greeks also played an important role in the history of this region. They founded many cities in this region, including Ephesus, Miletus, and Pergamon. These cities were the centers of trade, culture, and learning.
The Romans ruled this region for a time and built many roads, bridges, aqueducts, theaters. They also established a number of important cities, including Antalya and Side.

After the Roman Era, the region was ruled by Ottomans until today’s Turkish Republic was founded in 1923.
The region between İzmir and Antalya is a fascinating place to explore. The ruins of these ancient civilizations are a testament to their rich history and culture.

  • Ephesus was one of the largest and most important cities in the Roman Empire. It is home to a number of impressive ruins, including the Library of Celsus, the Temple of Hadrian, and the Great Theater.
  • Hierapolis was founded in the 2nd century BC by the Roman Emperor, Eumenes II. It was a popular spa town, and its hot springs were said to have healing properties. The city was also a religious center, and a home to a number of temples and shrines.
  • Xhantos was the capital of the ancient region of Lycia and founded in the 10th century BC by the Lycians, a people who spoke an Indo-European language and had a distinct culture. The city was located on a hilltop overlooking the Xanthos River.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrive İzmir

  • Arrive in İzmir and check into your hotel.
  • Take a tour around the historic center of İzmir, including the Konak Square, the İzmir Clock Tower, and the Kemeraltı Bazaar.
  • Have dinner at a seafood restaurant in the Alsancak district.
  • Overnight in İzmir

Day 2Ephesus & Virgin Mary House

  • Visit the ancient city of Ephesus, one of the most important archaeological sites in Turkey.
  • See the Library of Celsus, the Temple of Hadrian, and the Great Theater.
  • Take a walk along the ancient streets of Ephesus and imagine what life was like in this once-great city.
  • Visit Virgin Mary House, a small, two-room stone structure with a wooden roof. It is said to be the place where Mary, the mother of Jesus, spent her last days.
  • Relax with short tour in Şirince Village, famous for its houses, wines and souveniers (optional)
  • Drive to Pamukkale, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its white travertine terraces.

Day 3Pamukkale & Hot Baloon Tour

  • Enjoy a hot-air balloon tour at sunrise over the travertines (optional)
  • Visit the ancient city of Hierapolis, which is located on top of the travertines.
  • Take a dip in the Cleopatra Pool, a natural pool fed by hot springs.
  • Drive to Dalyan, a small town located on the Mediterranean coast and overnight.

Day 4Dalyan; Kaunos & Iztuzu Beach

  • Take a boat trip to the İztuzu Beach, a protected area that is home to a variety of sea turtles.
  • Visit the ancient city of Kaunos, which is located on the Dalyan River.
  • Enjoy popular mud-bath near Dalyan.
  • Drive to Antalya, the largest city on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey.

Day 5Antalya; Termossos Ancient City

  1. Drive to Termessos ancient city near Antalya and hike on the Taurus mountains.
  2. Visit the Antalya Archaeological Museum, which houses a collection of artifacts from the ancient cities of the region.
  3. Free time
  4. Eat, drink and dance at a colorful Turkish night (optional)

Day 6Antalya; Aspendos & Perge

  • Visit Aspendos and Perge ancient ruins.
  • Refresh at the Düden Waterfall.
  • Relax in a traditional Turkish hammam (optional)
  • Free afternoon

Day 7Return

  • Depart from Antalya (there will be additional itinerary due to the flight time)
